Basil in a bag

After Tricia’s dental appointment on Thursday, she didn’t want to go back to school…after all, she only had 20 minutes left in the school day…and she’d only be missing choir.  So, she said, “Hey Mom, let’s go walk around Krogers.”  I was cool with that.  After all, we had time to kill before picking up Gabbi from school.

So we drive over to Krogers grocery store to just browse the food aisles.  In the vegetable area, I notice these herb plants in plastic bags hanging off a stand.  I inquire further…it’s Living Basil…hydroponically grown.  And from Texas too!  That’s good cuz I always like buying local.  “Hydroponically grown herbs have exceptional quality and are much cleaner than typical field grown herbs.” – PSelection.  I checked out the directions on the packaging…IMAG0642
For home use:
  • Keep at room temperature.
  • Keep roots moist by adding a tablespoon of water as needed.
  • Clip leaves for cooking or food preparations as needed.
  • Wash before using.
Well, this is easy enough for me to maintain!  In other words, I won’t kill the plant!  Ha!  I took the plant out of the plastic bag and placed into a drinking glass with the same water it was packaged in.  I was gonna use a Mason jar we have in the cupboard, but figured John would be upset with me for using his favorite Redneck Tea drinking glass.  Never mind…I’ll use one of my glasses!  The plastic bag is a great marketing tool but the bag doesn’t really keep itself upwards and tips too easily.  A glass jar is best because then you can see when the roots need watering.  See how smarticles I am?

For an after school snack, my girls love eating sliced vine ripen tomatoes sprinkled with lemon pepper, layered with fresh basil and fresh mozzarella.  This is one of our favorite snacks! The sushi is just the icing on the cake!
